Jasper, Georgia, is the county seat of Pickens County, and the Chamber describes it as the county’s cultural and commercial hub, with a walkable downtown (Visit Pickens). A good day here mixes marble and mountains: an hour or two on Main Street, the Marble Museum if it’s a weekday, then a trail or a drive. Where a place doesn’t publish hours, we say so.
Downtown Jasper and Main Street
Main Street is the route of the Georgia Marble Festival parade, which comes down it at 10 a.m. on festival Saturday. The rest of the year it’s simply downtown, and the two buildings worth slowing down for are both marble.
Pickens County Courthouse
At 50 N. Main St., the courthouse is a two-story, marble-veneered Stripped Classical building, listed on the National Register in 2008 (National Register nomination). It went up in the late 1940s, after one of Jasper’s earlier courthouses burned in 1947; the nomination itself gives both 1947 and 1949. It’s a working government building with no visitor hours, so enjoy it from the square. The square also has an Old Federal Road marker, a fitting spot for it: the New Georgia Encyclopedia says more of the unpaved 1805 Federal Road survives in Pickens County than in any other county (New Georgia Encyclopedia).
Old Pickens County Jail
The old jail at 141 N Main St is two stories of brick and marble, with marble porch columns and two marble turrets, listed on the National Register in 1984 (National Register nomination). The Chamber dates it 1906 to 1982 and says its marble came from the Southern Mill in Marble Hill (Visit Pickens). We couldn’t confirm tour hours.
Kirby-Quinton Cabin
The Chamber lists this pioneer-era log cabin at the same 141 N Main St address and says it’s open for tours, but publishes no schedule (Visit Pickens). The cabin was transferred to the Marble Valley Historical Society. The New Georgia Encyclopedia, last edited in 2022, dates it to around 1860. Ask the Visitor Center at (706) 692-5600 before you count on getting inside.
Georgia Marble Museum
The museum shares space with the Pickens County Visitor Center inside Lee Newton Park, at 500 Veterans Memorial Blvd. The Chamber lists it as open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Visit Pickens); the tourism site’s footer says 9 to 4, so call ahead. Exhibits tie local marble to landmarks around the country, and the Visitor Center hands out free maps and visitor guides. No weekend hours are listed, so plan it for a weekday.
Second Saturday and the farmers market
Second Saturday Jasper brings live music and food downtown from 4 to 9 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month, March through October (Visit Pickens). October’s date has passed, so the season is over for 2026; if the pattern holds, it comes back in March.
On Saturday mornings the Jasper Farmers Market meets at Lee Newton Park, and the October 2026 listings put the start at 7:30 a.m. (Visit Pickens). The park has a walking path too, so it’s an easy first stop before downtown.
