Getting around: GA 515, I-575 and Atlanta
Pickens County grew rapidly from 1990 on, after GA 515 and I-575 were completed (New Georgia Encyclopedia). Those are still the roads in: the Chamber’s directions from Atlanta take I-75 North to I-575, which becomes GA 515, the Zell Miller Mountain Parkway, at the Pickens County line (Pickens County Chamber). The encyclopedia puts Jasper 60 miles north of Atlanta and 85 miles southeast of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Our own routing estimate from Lee Newton Park to central Atlanta is about 60 miles and roughly 71 minutes without traffic, so allow for traffic on top of that.
Ellijay is about 20 miles away (roughly 27 minutes) and Blue Ridge about 35 miles (roughly 45 minutes). Tate is about 6 miles and Talking Rock about 8. All of those are our routing estimates, not published figures.
Downtown, day to day
The Chamber describes Jasper as the county’s cultural and commercial hub, with a walkable downtown (Visit Pickens). The Pickens County Courthouse on North Main Street is marble-veneered, and the Old Pickens County Jail, from 1906, has marble porch columns and turrets. From March through October, Second Saturday Jasper brings live music and food downtown from 4 to 9 p.m. on the second Saturday of the month. On Saturday mornings the farmers market sets up at Lee Newton Park, which also has a walking path and the Visitor Center. More on our things to do in Jasper page.
History you live alongside
More remains of the unpaved 1805 Federal Road survive in Pickens County than in any other county, and there’s a marker for it on the courthouse square. In 1860, Jasper residents protested secession by raising and guarding a U.S. flag in front of the courthouse (New Georgia Encyclopedia). The town boomed after the Marietta and North Georgia Railroad arrived in 1883, and cotton and marble were the basis of its wealth. Jasper’s first newspaper, the Piedmont Republican, began the line of papers that leads to today’s Pickens County Progress.
The marble economy
The Tate family founded the Georgia Marble Company in 1884, and the quarry near Tate is still worked today; Polycor sells Georgia Marble varieties such as White Cherokee and Etowah (Polycor). The company’s Calcium Products Division, selling ground and pulverized marble, began in 1947 and became its primary product by the late 1980s. Read Georgia marble history and drive the Tate marble trail for the full story. Each October the Georgia Marble Festival fills Lee Newton Park; the 2026 festival ran October 3-4, and the Chamber has not announced 2027 dates.
